Where, Oh, Where Should This Icon Go...?
As an SEO Hosting Web Design Company, we are often contacted with questions related to the latest internet trends. With the recent advent of so many up-and-coming social networking, business networking, and content distribution sites, more and more clients are seeking to use these entities to market their businesses and get their names and specifics out there. We think this is a great idea, especially if you are using one of the frequently visited sites such as Facebook, a worldwide online community with 400 million active users. However, we always want you to be realistic. No, you probably will not pick up too much additional business just by creating a Facebook Business Account for your company or service, but it does certainly help to keep your name out there, and it is a great way to stay in contact with past clients, current clients and those that you would like to network with in your industry. This article is not intended to be an analysis of how important Facebook or any other networking site is with regards to Internet Marketing, but we do want to provide you with some background on these sites and include some information on where the icons for these types of networking sites and portals should go.
After you begin to use sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon, Tumblr, Myspace and others to market your business to users, you will probably contact us to get the icons for the sites added to your web site. The most obvious place to put the Icons for Facebook is somewhere on the homepage, but there may be other places that it would make sense, as well. Please tell us of your networking goals and, as your SEO Web Design Company, we can give you proper advice on where the Icons for Facebook would be the most effective. Most clients want to see these icons in the spot that most are familiar with seeing them on sites. Our graphic designers are very knowledgeable about current SEO Web Site Design trends and will work with you to decide the best place to put your icon. In the past, clients have requested that these types of icons be placed front and center on a homepage, and others have asked to have these types of networking icons appear larger on their sites. If you find yourself inclined to be like these others, keep in mind that 99% of regular internet users are familiar with these types of Icons for Facebook and, in almost every case, they will understand what to do with them (click on them) and be able to locate them easily. For example, a visitor to your site who also uses Facebook and would likely be prompted to “Become a Fan on Facebook” would know to look for the Facebook icon in the places that these icons are typically found on other sites.
So where on web sites are these types of icons typically found? Browse to some of your favorite sites; you will find these types of icons along the bottom of the homepage, along the side, and sometimes in other less obvious places. They do not have to be front and center, bolded, and in 26-point font to entice people to click and use them, as most internet users are already familiar with their function.
